Desription of a person
The first thing you notice about Douglas is his height. He is approximately 1.90 m but he looks taller. The next thing that strikes you about him is his amazing, impressive brown eyes.
When you first meet him, he seems rather modest and reserved but soon you realise that he is very outgoing and sociable. He has got a typical English sense of humour, he's very witty.
Of course, Douglas has his faults. He tends to be not very confident sometimes and also bites his lip, touches his hair and checks his mobile, which is a bit irritating. Douglas always has time for other people, he's especially good with contemporaries. He's brilliant in acting and telling stories.
Douglas likes dressing up and shopping for clothes. He usually wears a fashionable suit or jeans and blouses. His style is great, he dresses up as a typical englishman.
To sum up, Douglas is one of those people who get on with almost everyone and are kind to others. He's actually a very sociable, interesting and thoughtful person.

Success

1)What is your biggest success in life?
Have no idea.
2)What small successes do you have every day?
Getting up earlier than usually and doing exercises, getting excellent marks at school, a really enjoyable training or, conversely, a really complicated training I've brought off with.
3)How would you define success?

Success is the way you live, I think, because successful people are usually prosperous in lots of activities. Successful people have special lifestyles.
4)Is success a journey or a destination?
Probably, a real success is made of little one. I mean that the main success is a destination and common pieces of success are journey. For example, a journey is like numerous wins in local competitions  and a destination is winning Olympic Games for dozens of time.
5)What is your formula or recipe for success?
Inspiration, an aim, practice, wish, knowledge are the ingredients for success, I think.
6)Does success keep you happy?

Of course it does. Moreover, you become more self-reliant when you are successful.
7)Do you think success breeds success?
Probably. As I've already said above, a great success is made of little one.
8)Do you think you can teach someone to be successful?

According to my current stage of life, no.
9)Someone once said: "Success is getting what you want; happiness is wanting what you get." Do you agree with this quote?

With the 1st part of a quote-yes; with the 2nd-not really, for me happiness is satisfaction and pleasure.
10)Someone once said: "The two hardest things to handle in life are failure and success." What do you think of this?
Absoletely agree because you should pass through challenges but when you fail you should have a strength to start again. As Winston Churchill said: "Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm." I think Churchill meant that only a really successful man can handle these two things.

Describing people
Firstly, my friend isn't shy at all, she's very self-confident. She gets on with people very simply. Sometimes she tends to be slightly sensitive but usually she is pretty relaxed. She isn't serious but she's fairly thoughtful. She tends to be slightly dreamy, especially during the lessons but usually she's pretty enthusiastic about what she's doing. Sometimes she bites her nails and lip when she's thinking. The thing that really annoys me is that she is constantly checking her mobile. This quirk irritates me a lot because while checking her phone she doesn't listen to me. As for her abilities, she's incredibly good at drawing and painting. She sings unbelievably well, her voice is fantastic, however she doesn't play any musical instruments.

Homework for holidays

Файла:. Пушкин Александр Соколов П. JPG
Culture Choice 2
ex.4 p.108
1) The greatest writer ever from my country is Alexander Pushkin.
2) Firstly, he's the creator of the modern literary Russian language. Secondly, he wrote a lot of masterpieces such as "Captain's Daughter ". Moreover, he also wrote some fairy tales which children know from their infancy.
3) Pushkin is very well-known abroad. I think every person will call Pushkin's name when he's asked about the greatest Russian writer.
4) Alexander Pushkin influenced on our culture very strongly. A lot of generations are brought up with his works.
5) As for me, I like Pushkin's works. My favourite masterpiece is "Captain's daughter". Pushkin's works are really interesting.

ex.6 p.108
1) Laertes wants revenge from Hamlet because Hamlet killed Laertes's father.
2) Hamlet explains all the bad things he has done to Laertes's family because of hid insanity.
3) Claudius is the real villain in the play because he killes a lot of people in the play, organises a fencing match between Hamlet and Laertes, persuades Laertes to poison his sword in order o kill Hamlet.
4) Hamlet kills Claudius because Claudius killed Hamlet's mother.
5) Hamlet and Laertes are not to blame for what they have done because Claudius is the real villain.
6)  Before dying Hamlet talks with Laertes, asks Horatio to tell everyone the truth about what happened and asks him to vote for Fortinbras.

ex.7 p. 108
1) Personally, I didn't enjoy the scene from Hamlet because I don't like tragedy, I prefer comedies which make us feel happy and pleased.
2) My favourite character is Hamlet whereas my least favourite character is evil Claudius.
3) I can think of alternative endings to the play. For example, the possible situation is when everyone recovers and stays alive and Claudius is in prison for all the bad things he has done.

Describing the photo

Describing the photo, p.52

I took the photo last summer when I had holidays in Corsica. I was walking along the beach when I sighted three old men playing a really strange game. They were so excited and interested in the game that I decided to take a photo of the process. Later I found out that this game is one of the most favourite activities of Corsican pensioners. It's called Petanque. The goal of the game is to throw hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball, while standing inside a starting circle with both feet on the ground. Of course, I tried to play this game. Actually, it's not easy to win!
I decided to show the difference between old people's activity all over the world. That's why you can see this photo in the magazine.

Homework p.50 ex.4

1) Russia is colored orange on the graph.
2) In Russia we have some health inequalities, unfortunately. For example, fee-for-service medicine allows us better service and treatment but you have to pay lots of money to get medical help you want. That's why people usually get free but not so good treatment.
3) Some diseases could be prevented easily. For example, if you don't want to catch a cold or a flu you should strengthen the immune system. There are lots of ways to do this, they are: hardening, prophylaxis and also some simple rules like washing your hands after coming from the street. You should also have a healthy lifestyle because a risk of different diseases decreases.
By the way, it's likely to have regular check-ups to prevent dangerous diseases such as tuberculosis.
4) The government can do lots of things to improve health.
The government should hold regular compulsory population's check-ups.
Personally, I think that it should propagandize healthy lifestyle. There are lots of methods to do that: holding sport events, holding lectures in schools, banning TV commercials which are connected with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes,
opening more cafes where we can eat healthy food not junk.
5) To improve health people should, firstly, decide do they want to do that or they don't. That's to say, people should choose the right lifestyle. Drinking alcohol, smoking, taking drugs are things which healthy lifestyle can't stand so people should give up bad habits. Also they should do more exercise, have necessary treatment from the first day of malaise or especially an illness, have regular check-ups.

Well-being

I've always been lucky with my health. I have sprained my knee but I have never broken a bone, fortunately. In the winter, I sometimes get colds. I try and stay happy and relaxed all the time. I seldom feel depressed.
To keep healthy, I do regular exercise. I go swimming, also I have quite a good diet, although sometimes I prefer eating junk food. My main problem is that I don't get enough sleep. I go to bed late because I usually do my homework till night (by the way, I hate it!).
In my opinion, the most dangerous desease in my country is cancer although people are having heart attacks and getting lung desease because of smoking.

Advertising

Advertising
You're worth it!

1. Perfume "Chanel №5" by Chanel, the most famous brand in the world, is being advertised.
Advertisers usually make the product seem attractive. One of the methods is the advert on which a famous person is showed. Audrey Tautou on the advert of Chanel makes it more attractive. Moreover, it's very important to show that a person on an advert is happy and satisfied with a product. Also advertisers put photos of young and beautiful people.

3. In Russian advertisements, unfortunately, there are some stereotypes. Advertisers also show an usual woman as a housemaid in adverts of household products especially. There's one very interesting stereorype in TV commercials: children never eat vegetables. Women are showed as really active, intelligent and wise people; men, conversely, are lazy and interested in nothing except for football. Of course, there're much more stereotypes in Russian advertisements which we face everyday.

Blurbs for three my favourite books
1. The book blurb for "The Inseparable Twins"
One of my favourite novels is "The Inseparable Twins" by A. Pristavkin. It causes you to think about injustice to children, about really challenging situations in their lives. It is a great book about two orphan twins. They go to the Caucasus with other children from their orphanage. Twins dream about a better life. Will the Caucasus bring them happiness that they want? Will they be together forever? Will they stay in the Caucasus forever?

2. The book blurb for "Professor Dowell's Head"
Professor Dowell's Head is an exciting 1925 science fiction novel by Russian author Alexander Belyayev. It is also one of my favourite novels. Professor Dowell and his assistant surgeon Dr. Kern are working on the resurrection of the dead. Dowell dies. Professor Dowell's head is now kept alive and used by Dr. Kern for getting some scientific secrets. Is there another llife after death? Can a human's head live separately from his body? What will happen with Dowell's head? Are there more alive heads? Can Dowell's head have the second body?

3. The book blurb for "Amphibian Man"
The second novel by Belyayev I love very much is "Amphibian Man". It is an exciting science fiction adventure novel. It was published in 1928. Argentinean doctor Salvator, a scientist and a surgeon, makes his son Ichtiander a life-saving transplant - a set of shark gills. The experiment is a success but it limits the young man's ability to interact with the world outside his ocean environment. How Ichtiander will communicate with the world? Will there be a day when Ichtiader goes out the water? Will he succeed? Are there any people who are interested in his incredible abilities?
